Care Instructions
How To Care For Your Board:
Below are the Do’s and Don’ts for the proper care and maintenance of your new Deer Park Woodwork board. By following these basic guidelines, you’ll ensure the board’s longevity- giving you years of use and enjoyment!
Do’s:
- Clean board with soap and cold water only.
- Wipe down with a damp cloth only - never place under running water.
- Dry immediately with a towel.
- If your board does not have feet, air dry standing up or raised on a rack to permit airflow.
- If your board has feet, it can be laid flat to dry.
- Condition the board after each use for the first month with a board wax, like our board butter.
Don’ts:
-Never put the board in the dishwasher
-Absolutely do not let the faucet from the sink run over the board—EVER
-Do not dunk or let the board stand in water
-Never use bleach
-Never lay flat to dry if your board does not have feet
-Never place or rest hot things on the board like pots or pans that may burn or discolour the wood
-Do not leave food sitting on an end grain cutting board, as this will cause moisture to build up and can lead to cracking or splitting
More Tips:
We recommend using our Deer Park Board Butter, a combination of mineral oil and beeswax, after each use for the first month. Over time, your knives will leave marks—this is normal. To remove them, a light sanding with 220 grit or finer sandpaper is all that’s needed.
If you notice the board has taken on too much water (this applies mostly to end grain boards), allow it to dry out in a well-ventilated area for a minimum of 24 hours before further use or conditioning.
If you opted for grip handles, extra care needs to be taken to avoid moisture buildup around the edges. Allow the board to dry thoroughly between washes—for a minimum of 24 hours.
* We Highly Recommend adding Feet To All End Grain Boards
If you own an end grain board without feet and it is left flat to dry, it will most likely warp slightly on one side. If this happens, simply flip it and allow it to dry on the opposite side. This can also happen if you cut something like fruit or a roast and leave it sitting—so always clean and dry promptly.
